Key fob not working? Describe the symptom before replacing it

“The fob does not work” can mean several things: a button does nothing, the car does not detect the key, or the doors unlock but the engine will not start. Start with the behavior you can observe. It is more useful than deciding in advance that the key needs programming.

Which function stopped working?

Look at the problem in separate parts. Does the remote lock or unlock the doors? Does normal keyless access work, if the car has it? Does the vehicle recognize the key for starting? Note any dashboard message exactly as it appears.

The answers can be mixed. A working door button does not prove every part of the key system is working, and a silent remote does not by itself establish that the fob must be replaced. A provider needs those distinctions before recommending a service.

Tell the story in a few concrete details

Record when the problem started and what happened immediately before it. You do not need a technical diagnosis.

  • Did this key work yesterday, or is it a new part that has never worked?
  • Was the battery or plastic case recently changed?
  • Was the fob dropped, exposed to liquid or visibly damaged?
  • Is the problem constant, or does it happen only in certain places?
  • Does an existing working spare behave differently?

Use the instructions for your exact vehicle

Check the owner’s manual for the correct fob battery and any approved backup entry or starting method. Procedures differ; do not assume that a tip for a similar-looking fob applies to yours. Stop if the case will not open as described rather than prying at the electronics.

Ford’s owner guidance identifies low remote-battery power and signal interference as possible reasons for poor remote response. Those are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis for every car. Describe the observations to the provider instead of repeatedly buying parts to test a guess.

A newly bought fob needs a different conversation

If an online purchase has never worked with the car, start with compatibility. Have the listing and part identifiers ready. Matching the case and button count is not the same as confirming that the electronic part can be used on your vehicle.

If an established key stopped working, say whether other keys still start the car. Bring the current keys to an arranged appointment when requested. A car that does not start may also need a vehicle assessment, so do not treat all no-start symptoms as a key programming job.

What to ask Locksmith 904

Give Locksmith 904 a short symptom report: “My [year, make, model] is at [location]. This fob [worked before / has never worked]. The doors [unlock / do not unlock], the car [starts / does not start], and the dash says [exact message].” Add whether you need vehicle entry. Those observations help the team distinguish a programming request from another key or vehicle assessment.
