Why does your key fob work only sometimes?

An intermittent fob can work perfectly when someone comes to inspect it. A short record of what fails—and what still works—helps turn an occasional annoyance into a service request that can be assessed.

Start with the pattern

Does the remote fail only in one parking area, only at a distance, or everywhere? Is the problem limited to one button? Does the car start normally even when remote locking is unreliable? Make these distinctions before replacing parts.

Use a few observations from normal use rather than repeatedly locking and unlocking the car for an extended test. Keep the vehicle and keys under your control. A note such as 'unlock failed outside work, but worked beside the driver's door' is more useful than 'the fob is broken.'

Range is affected by more than programming

Honda's 2025 Accord manual explains that remote operating range depends on the surroundings and that changing operating distance can indicate a low battery. Its guidance applies to that vehicle, but it illustrates why a short-range complaint should not automatically be sold as a programming fault.

Tell the technician whether the same problem follows the vehicle to different locations. If it happens in one place only, say so. If it started after a drop, liquid exposure, battery replacement or case change, include that history even if the remote later worked again.

Separate remote buttons from passive door access

Pressing a button on the fob and touching a keyless door handle are different actions. A complaint about the handle should identify which door is affected and whether the remote buttons still operate it.

The Accord Hybrid manual describes model-specific limits involving remote position, handle sensors and water around the handle. Those details are a reminder to check your own manual's access instructions instead of treating every delayed handle response as a defective fob.

A spare can provide a comparison

If a previously working spare is available, note whether it shows the same symptom in the same circumstances. That comparison can help the technician plan the assessment. It does not prove that the vehicle is fault-free or that the first remote can be repaired.

Check the documented battery specification before buying replacements. If changing a battery requires force, damages the cover, or leaves the case open, stop using that remote and have it inspected. Preserve the old case and any loose parts for the appointment.

Bring a short record, not a guessed diagnosis

For Locksmith 904, have the make, model, year and available keys ready, along with two or three examples of the failure. Ask whether assessment of an intermittent fault is included in the visit and what happens if the symptom cannot be reproduced.

Agree on the proposed remedy after inspection. If a replacement is recommended, ask which functions will be supplied and tested. A remote that works once during handover should also be considered against the particular intermittent symptom you reported.
