Getting a spare car key while you still have one

A spare car key is most useful when it can do the job you expect and someone can reach it. Before ordering one, decide whether you need emergency door access, a second starting key or a complete remote. Those requests can involve different parts and work.

Choose the spare’s job first

Start with an ordinary day: another driver needs the car, your key goes missing at work, or the remote stops responding. A blade that opens a door may help with the second situation but may not provide a way to start the vehicle. Ask for the functions you actually want.

The Honda Accord Hybrid owner’s manual gives a useful example of this distinction: its built-in mechanical key provides door access when remote operation is unavailable. That is a model-specific feature, not a rule that every spare blade starts every car. Check your own owner’s manual and key system.

Use the working key as a reference

Keep the current key available for the appointment. Explain whether its buttons, blade and starting function work normally. If it is already unreliable, describe that when booking so the request is not treated as a straightforward spare without checking the fault.

Ask the provider whether all existing keys need to be present and whether the proposed work changes any existing key’s operation. Do not assume that instructions for one vehicle, or a video showing a similar key, apply to your year and configuration.

  • Vehicle year, make and model.
  • Which keys still open the car and start it.
  • The functions the new spare must provide.
  • Any key or fob you have already purchased.

Test it before putting it away

At handover, ask the technician to demonstrate the agreed functions with the new key. If starting is included, confirm that the result belongs to that key, rather than relying on another working key left nearby. Have the technician arrange the test appropriately for your vehicle.

Keep the spare separate from the everyday key. Putting both on one ring makes it possible to lose both together. Choose a secure place or trusted person you can reach, and make sure other authorized drivers know the plan. A spare locked inside the vehicle is a poor fallback for a lockout.

Arrange a spare in Jacksonville

Locksmith 904 handles spare-key requests for supported vehicles with its own mobile technicians. Call with the vehicle details and tell us that a working key remains. We will check the available key options before arranging service.

Ask whether the estimate includes the part, cutting, programming and travel. You approve the final price after the technician inspects the vehicle and before work begins. Keep the resulting key information with your vehicle records so a future request starts with clear details.
