Count the actual keys, then check the functions
Ask the seller to show every key, remote and mechanical insert being included. A second plastic housing is not necessarily a second working starting key. Check for any missing blade and ask the seller to demonstrate the functions represented in the sale.
Where multiple electronic keys are supplied, each should be checked on its own under the appropriate vehicle procedure. Hyundai’s service campaign for vehicles shipped with one smart key specifically includes separate tests of both keys after the additional one is supplied. That is a useful example of testing the actual result, not a promise about how every used car must be sold.
Ask what happened to the other key
The seller may have a key at home, may never have received it, or may have lost it. Ask directly and record the answer. A promised key delivery should identify what will be supplied and who is responsible for arranging any cutting or programming.
If a key is unaccounted for, discuss the security implications with the manufacturer’s service department or a qualified provider. Volvo’s S90 guidance, for example, calls for the missing remote’s code to be removed and the remaining keys brought to the workshop. The available process depends on the vehicle; simply adding another key is not the same question.
Make a spare-key agreement specific
Before agreeing that a spare is “included,” clarify whether it is a complete starting key with remote functions or only an emergency blade. Ask whether the work will be completed before delivery or at a later appointment, and keep the arrangement with your purchase records.
If you are taking responsibility for the spare, obtain an estimate for the exact vehicle while the working key is still available. Include the supplied key’s functions and any part already offered by the seller. Do not buy a matching-looking fob just to finish the handover quickly.
Prepare for the ownership handover
A service provider still needs reasonable proof that you are entitled to request a new key. If ownership records are being updated, explain what paperwork you have before arranging the appointment. Having just bought the car does not remove the need to connect you with the vehicle.
For connected or digital-key features, consult the manufacturer’s transfer instructions separately. Do not assume that taking possession of the physical key changes every account or access permission associated with the vehicle.
Arrange a supported spare after the purchase
Locksmith 904 checks spare-key requests for supported vehicles in Jacksonville. Tell us the year, make and model, that you have one working key, and what you want the second key to do. Our team confirms the available service before booking.
Keep the completed spare separate from the everyday key. Save the invoice and part details with the vehicle records so the next owner or an authorized driver can understand what keys were supplied.
